Almost everyone likes backyard bird watching and with some of us it includes
those
entertaining fuzzy
little critters the squirrel. The squirrels bushy tail, quite looks,
entertaining antics and their mischievous ways makes the squirrels
fun to watch.Squirrels are playful, intelligent, determined, agile and
down right aggravating at times. When they show their destructive side
of their personality and their determination to eat all the wild
bird foods we
put out in our bird feeder. We then start looking for a way to out smart
them and a squirrel proof feeder is one way.
Squirrels will take over any unprotected bird feeders we put out because of their size and the shear amount of food they can eat or take. They will drive the birds away from any unprotected bird feeders and claim them. This need for squirrel proof feeders has made bird feeder companies come up with various squirrel proof bird feeders or so they hope. Three companies have developed a squirrel proof bird feeders that actually uses the squirrel’s own weight against them.
This
squirrel proof bird
feeder activates
when
the squirrel sits on the bird perch, the squirrels weight causes the
battery
powered motor to activate. The motor makes the perch flip up and close,
preventing the squirrel from getting to the bird food. Because of the
closing action of the feeder the squirrel’s is sent
tumbling to the ground. This weight activated squirrel proof
bird
feeder is called theYankee
Flipper Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder.made by
Droll Yankee
Yes the
name is quite a mouthful however this squirrel proof feeder
does the job and no the squirrel is not hurt just supper surprised.
There
are many other ideas that have been
tried
in the continuing war against squirrels and their determination to
claim bird feeders.The
Stokes Squirrel Baffle by Stokes
Select
is one
of them. This baffle is made to break apart when a squirrel tries
getting to the bird seed.
With other squirrel baffles, the squirrel proofing idea are frequently large domes that squirrels have trouble jumping over or climbing around because of the smooth and slippery surface that is used.
Squirrel
baffles used along
with different bird feeder
designs is one way. With one of these types of squirrel
proofing a squirrel
proof baffle is put on a pole mounted
feeder below the feeder its self. There are also squirrel proof baffles
that are used above the bird feeder usually being hung from a
strong chain. Some companies have designed squirrel
proof bird feeders
that have built in baffles.
Another type
of squirrel proof bird
feeder is a
wire enclosed tub feeder. With this type of feeder
the holes of the cage are too
small for the squirrel to get to the seed. The holes of the
cage are however just the
right size for birds to eat their seeds in peace. This feeder is called
a Caged
Bird Feeder.
Another really good squirrel proof feeder
is the
AbsoluteII Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder by
Heritage Farms
. This feeder
has feeding ports on
both sides for easy aces ability. I also features windows above the
feeding stations so you can see how much feed is in the bird feeder.
The clear windows are polycarbonate and can not be damaged by
squirrels. This is a steel bird feeder and can take the weather. This
squirrel proof feeder is also activated by the squirrel's weight on the
perch. The seed ports closing mechanism can be adjusted to close with
the weight of large birds like grackles, starlings and morning doves
not just squirrels. The baffles in the seed port also helps to reduce
wasted seed. This squirrel proof bird feeder has a large 2 gallon
capacity. It comes with a heavy-duty hanger with snap-link
WunderHook and usually includes a 4-section steel pole so the
feeder can be hung or pole mounted.
For those of you creative people you can squirrel proof your own bird feeder by placing it on a wire mounted platform. Attach the 2 ends of the wire to 2 sturdy and strong walls or posts. Now between the feeder and the posts, put PVC tubing on the wire. When the squirrel tries to walk over the tubing to get to the bird feeder the slippery tubing will spin, thereby causing the squirrel to lose its balance and fall to the ground.
The main thing to remember in your fight with
squirrels
is that they are persistent, agile and acrobatic and will try eating
through anything in their way. One of the best ways to squirrel proof
your bird feeders is to place them away from places like
trees, roofs and railings that squirrels can jump
from.
Keep in mind that a squirrel can jump at least 8 to 10 feet so
keep it at least that distance away from those places, and at least 4
feet above the ground. This is the most
important way to squirrel proof your birds’ food from squirrels. Or you could
always just throw in the towel and give them their own squirrel
feeder
and start
feeding the squirrels as well!
