We like backyard bird watching and love to have birds in our yards. F feeding the
birds that flock to our backyards and gardens is an easy way to
encourage them to come or even decide to live there. To make this
habitat even more attractive to these birds that flock there
we place
bird baths, and other bird
friendly items around the garden.
Some times
bird
friendly items can be very expensive and yet they are desired or
needed. The best way to be able to provide suitable things like bird
feeders is to make your own cheap bird feeders from items you
have at home.
Home Made Suet and Home Made Suet Feeder
There are a lots of things that you can
use. You can use
a old onion bag to hold suet cakes or balls that
you have
made. Make your suet from any meat fat, usually beef is used.
This is easily obtainable at your butcher’s or meat
department
and is sometimes free or very low in cost. Be careful when making them
as it can burn you. Boil
the fat till melted, then add fruits, peanuts, peanut butter, grains or
seeds mix and cool. When it is cool role the mixture into balls, logs,
or cakes and let set. Place the formed suet mixture into the onion bag, or
suet feeder and
hang it outside from a tree or pole. Then birds like
Woodpeckers,
Bluebirds and Nuthatches as well as some smaller birds will
enjoy
this treat you have made and placed in your cheap bird feeders, the
onion bags, how easy is that.
Home Made Pine Cone Feeder
You can also use pine cones to make cheap bird feeders. To create your own tasty pine cone bird feeder, you will need to tie a strong piece of string or twine around one end of a pine cone, to make your hanger. Then roll the pine cone in a thick layer of peanut butter, then roll or sprinkle the entire peanut butter pine cone in bird seeds of your choice. Use the twine or string to hang up your cheap pine cone bird feeder in a tree or even from the roof.
Home Made Soda Bottle Feeder
Some other cheap bird feeders can be made from used plastic 2 liter soda or drink bottles. Wash the bottle out thoroughly with warm water only. When the bottle is completely dry replace the cap back on the bottle. Turn the bottle over so that the fat end is facing you, then cut 3 small triangular flaps in the bottle. These flaps should not be very big or very wide. Make sure the pointed end of the flaps face towards the bottle cap when they are pulled outwards. These flaps will act as the bird perches of your “new” cheap bird feeders. Then fill your bird feeds with seed and hang in a tree or from a pole.
Home Made Soda Bottle Hummingbird Feeder
This is a cheep way to have and make a Hummingbird
feeder. You will need to buy the Soda
Bottle Feeder kit cost around
$3.78 which is cheep. Take a Soda bottle and place it in the pre-made
holder that has a base with flower feeding ports and now you have a
nectar feeder.
Home Made Hummingbird Nectar
If you want to prepare your own Hummingbird mixture this one has been found to be a favorite of feeding Hummingbirds. Take 1 part cane sugar, 4 parts water, and boil together for 1 to 2 minutes so as to kill bacteria and slow down spoilage, cool then fill the feeder. Do not use artificial sugar or honey as it can kill the birds. Also Hummingbirds prefer cane sugar so if you are having problems attracting the Hummers check the type of sugar you are using. You can add red food coloring to help attract the humming birds to your feeder how ever I do not recommend it as it is not a natural substance.Keep the nectar mixture in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
One thing you must remember to do is to clean your Humming bird feeder every time you add new Hummingbird food to your feeder. This can be done by washing in warm water and using a brush.
Home Made Bird Shish Kabob Feeder
Everyone loves to eat Shish Kabobs. This food type does not have to be restricted to humans alone. You can give birds a fruit and vegetable “Shish Kabob” of their own. What you need to do is to choose some fruits, bread pieces and vegetables that you can give the birds. Pierce these foods together with a metal hook to create some tasty cheap bird feeders.
Home Made Tray Bird Feeder
More, easy to make yet cheap bird feeders are made from trays that you fill with bird seeds. You can put these tray feeders up on tree stumps or knee high tables to make platform feeders. You should however be careful to place these trays in open areas or keep your eye out for cats who might decide to make a meal out of your birds.
Whatever you decide to make
your cheap bird feeders
from, remember to keep sharp edged items away from them and be careful
of things they may get caught in. The birds can be hurt from these
edges. Besides this anything that will hold wild bird foods and suet cakes
are good cheap bird feeders
that you can use to make
bird feeder
for your back
yard. This
is a
very cheap and enjoyable way to draw your feathered friends
to
your garden and backyard. Now sit back, watch and enjoy the
birds.
